15 Things to Do in Órgiva and Around (La Alpujarra Guide)
Órgiva is not a place with a list of attractions. It is a place where you slow down, and then notice that there was quite a lot going on all along. Here is the honest list — the things locals and long-stay guests actually do, in roughly the order you should try them.
1. Come on a Thursday for the market
The weekly market (mornings, in the municipal car park in the north of town) is the best two hours you can spend in Órgiva. Fruit and vegetables, olives, cheese, shoes, tools, clothes, and craft stalls around the edges — plus everyone in the valley, talking. If you are here for one day, make it Thursday.
2. Walk down to the river
The Guadalfeo runs below the town, and the paths along it are the quietest place to be within ten minutes of the plaza. Go in the late afternoon, when the light comes across the valley sideways.
3. Watch the sunset from a rooftop
The town is in a bowl between ridges, which means the sunsets are theatrical. Any rooftop, any terrace, any evening. Ours is open to guests — bring something cold.
4. Eat something you have never eaten
For a town of a few thousand people, the food range is absurd: Andalusian classics, vegetarian kitchens, wholefood shops, and food from further away — including Eritrean dishes with vegan options and homemade kombucha in our own garden. Try at least one thing you cannot pronounce.
5. Go and listen to live music
Flamenco is the local tradition, but the town runs on jams and acoustic nights. Ask in any bar what is happening this week; in summer there is something most weekends, from the Plaza de las Culturas to the carpa municipal.
6. Spend a day in the Poqueira villages
Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira climb up the Poqueira gorge on the other side of the valley — white villages, craft shops, a famous view down to the sea on a clear day. Take the bus or drive; go early, they get busy by midday.
7. Drive up to Trevélez for ham and altitude
Trevélez is one of the highest villages in Spain and famous for its jamón. The road up is the point as much as the destination.
8. Stand under the snow on the Sierra Nevada
In winter and spring you can see snow on the peaks while sitting outside in a t-shirt. The high villages and the national park are a day trip from Órgiva, and there are walks for every level of ambition.
9. Go to the beach for the afternoon
The Mediterranean coast (Motril, Salobreña, Almuñécar) is roughly forty minutes away. In spring and autumn this is the best of both worlds: mountains in the morning, sea in the afternoon.
10. Spend a full day in Granada
Granada is about an hour away: the Alhambra (book tickets well in advance — seriously), the Albayzín, the tea houses, the tapas. It is one of the great cities of Spain and you can do it as a day trip.
11. Walk to a village for lunch
There are footpaths between the villages and cortijos around Órgiva, from gentle hour-long strolls to serious mountain days. Ask locally about the condition of paths before setting off, and take water.
12. Buy something handmade
Craft is not a souvenir industry here — it is what a lot of people actually do for a living. Ceramics, jewellery, textiles, leather, paintings. Our own shop stocks Asian and African crafts, clothes and wellness products, and there are workshops and studios all over the valley.
13. Book a massage, a yoga class or something stranger
The density of bodywork, therapy and movement practitioners here is genuinely unusual. Try acupuncture, reiki, breathwork, a yoga class on a roof at seven in the morning. Nothing about it is expensive.
14. Sit in the plaza and do nothing
The Plaza de la Constitución (and the Plaza de las Culturas) exist for exactly this. Coffee, a book, watching three generations and four nationalities go past. This is the actual local sport.
15. Stay long enough to stop counting days
The real Órgiva experience is the fourth or fifth day, when you realise you have not looked at a list of things to do. That is when people start asking about monthly rates.
Where to sleep while you do all this
Ananda's Mundo is a guesthouse, hidden garden and craft shop in the centre of Órgiva — a couple of minutes from the plaza, five from the market. Rooms with high ceilings and rooftop views, a garden with Eritrean food and drinks, and live music and community evenings downstairs.
